    Hither & Yahn

I was fortunate enough in late 2005 to become acquainted with Bob Lundy when I was engaged to be the Poetry Program Director at the Solana Beach Library. One thing led to another, and we have been writing and performing as a team ever since.

We have very different styles and approaches to poetry. One day he was teasing me about one of my pieces, and quickly dashed off what he called a “counterpoem” to my poem. I  retaliated in kind. From this exchange was born our series of “Hither and Yahn” books, in which we have placed pairs of poems and counterpoems on a variety of subjects. This is one of our (excuse me, his) favorite examples:

Royal Waistcoat

My polyester waistcoat jacket
made with crinkly nylon
(so it's easy to pack it)
brings romance and
joy to my day,
transforming my fat --
at least ten pounds away,
bestowing entitlement: . . .
‘E M P R E S S AT P L A Y’ .

About Your Majesty’s
New Waistcoat…

Style has a cost:
All my cash may be lost,
So please show concern for finances.
As the Empress cavorts, plays, and dances,
For her ankles and knees, have a care.
No doubt scales will reveal that
Those ten pounds of real fat
Are still sitting solidly there.
